TikTok Content Creators Driving Parallel Market for Unapproved Weight-Loss Drug

A shadow economy for unlicensed slimming medications is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.

Investigational Treatment Acquiring Traction Online

Retatrutide, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its supposed weight-reducing properties. Followers are encouraged to contact these accounts directly for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Active Trade on Social Networks

Additionally, a robust market exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison photos, administration instructions and assertions of rapid British shipping. Vendors promote the substance there before directing buyers to other platforms for transactions.

Understanding The Experimental Drug

This medication is an investigational injection created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could help patients lose up to 25% of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Voice Concerns

However, doctors and chemists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in individuals injecting products of unknown origin.

Some experts said the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Enforcement

Marketing the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be marketed or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several influencers try to sidestep the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but advertising and distribution can still violate medicines, marketing, and customer laws, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or prison.

Service Response and Content Removal

Based on TikTok, the platform has taken down problematic material and prohibited associated hashtags and search suggestions. The company stated it was dedicated to keeping the platform safe and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Online Marketplace Activities

Investigations also discovered communities with up to 9,000 participants marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with thousands of members, filled with photos of slimming results, positive reviews and step-by-step instructions for preparing or administering at home.

After minutes of entering one group, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where most transactions take place. The vendor provided an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. None inquired about body mass, health issues or previous experience.

Item Details and Pricing

Within these groups, messages display dark colored packages with postal service labels, stating to include new batches. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors usually sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how much time a injector should be used, sellers give conflicting answers varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Security Measures

A spokesperson for Telegram said it regularly moderated harmful content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“Individuals are administering materials they can’t verify. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these digital versions may not contain what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of an online medical service connected the increase in interest to current cost increases for authorized weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are using social media. But fake treatments are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she explained.

Her team has previously seen individuals injured by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” said the doctor. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Statement

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been evaluated or approved by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet approved … may subject users to possibly serious medical dangers”.
